Fostoria Habitat for Humanity Selects Partner Family
The Bemis family recently received some welcome news from the Fostoria Area Habitat for Humanity. Terry and his wife, Cynde, have been accepted as a partner family through the local organization. The couple along with their son applied for the opportunity due to current accommodation issues created by health conditions. Their new home will provide a much needed simple and open floor plan as well as air conditioning. Becky Haaser, Office Manager for the Fostoria Area Habitat for Humanity, called the family. Terry shared their reaction saying that “Cynde and I were very happy when we got the call. Becky asked if we were sitting down when we got the awesome news.” He went on to say “Cynde and I looked at each other and said ‘Our dream has come true, were going to have our own home, a place that will belong to us and where we can happily retire when the time comes.’ Gabe, our son will be able to walk or ride his bike to school, because we only will be a couple of minutes, away.”
The home will be located on Arbor Street in northern Fostoria. Weather and schedule permitting, the Fostoria Area Habitat for Humanity expects to have the ground breaking on July 28th of this year. Terry and Cynde went the extra mile in showing their desire to be considered as a family partner. The couple knew that each family partner is required to put at least 100 sweat equity hours of work into their habitat home. Immediately after they applied, Terry and Cynde started doing community service at the Fostoria Sharing Kitchen and are arranging to put volunteer hours in at the Fostoria Community Hospital. The Bemis family is excited to get started on their home. They plan to put more than the required hours in to make their dream a reality.
The Fostoria Area Habitat for Humanity is a United Way community partner that was founded in 1990. To date, 19 families totaling 95 people have been helped through the generosity and support of the people of Fostoria. Six new builds have been completed and 13 houses have been rehabilitated within the community.
The agency continues to accept volunteers in many capacities. The current need is for lawn care on empty lots in town. Anyone with various construction or trade skills are encouraged to contact the local Habitat office. Local groups and clubs are welcome to rally their members for a day of work. Contact Becky Haaser at 419-435-2844 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org for details.
Families wishing to be considered as a partner family should visit fostoriahabitat.com for the application procedure and guidelines.
Fostoria Area Habitat is excited about our recently purchased three acres where the former Field Elementary School was located in the 100 block of West Sixth Street.
The board is working on a 10 year+ plan to build approximately 6-8 houses. We are committed to the Habitat mission and in getting the mission message out to the community of Fostoria.
The rehab of the property at 305 East Center Street is slated to begin in January or February 2014. A new build on Arbor Street is planned to begin in June 2014.
Volunteers will be needed to make both of these projects a reality. It’s easy to help out:
• You can bring a lunch, snack or refreshments for our other hard working volunteers on the weekends.
• You can volunteer
• You can bring your group to volunteer
Look for volunteer dates for both of these projects to be published in the near future. If you can’t volunteer but would like to help, please check out our “donate” page to learn how you can help give someone a fresh start in a new home.
With the help of so many, the Habitat project on Atha Avenue was completed in September 2012. The family moved into its new home in October 2012. We, together as a community, have made one more family’s dream of owning a home come true! Thank you to everyone that helped!
This summer, we will be starting a rehab of of 305 E. Center St. More information on dates and a schedule of volunteer days will be posted soon. Please check back to see when you can help out.
We are beginning to plan for a new build in the Spring of 2014. More information and location on this project will be posted soon.
